L’Esperance Restaurant, Soufflenheim France

Boy did we get lucky today!  Back from a trip to Jade’s school in Walbourg, France to discuss the vicissitudes of a 16 year old in boarding school, we desperately needed refreshment before continuing our trip back to Stuttgart.  Of course I felt the need to shop.  Hello!  It was France and I found a Leclerc supermarket in the town of Soufflenheim.  We decided to address the shopping list first before going on to lunch.  The Leclerc in Soufflenheim is marvelous!  I found pork cheeks, beef marrow bones, ground premium veal and, of course, an obscene amount of corked wine.  Hallelujah!

L’Esperance Bar Restaurant is on the main street of Soufflenheim with adequate parking in the front.  From the moment that we entered, we felt that we were in the right place.  The joint was jumping with a crowd of people who were there for good food, ambiance and wine.  It was one of those “local” restaurants that we all search for in France and are lucky to find.  The French husband and wife team are both Swiss trained chefs who have brought their expertise back to their region and, specializing in regional/traditional cuisine are apparently, from the packed restaurant and the superior food we had, going to be a fixture for years to come.  It’s one of those places where you can trust the house wine.  Order a “pichet”.  The large one.

The bread was superior; crusty and fragrant.  Where was my focus!?  We both ordered the lamb steaks with a fantastic wine reduction, accompanied by frites (the real thing) and a gorgeous salad with house dressing.  Okay, I’ll bring the tripod next time 🙁

What we both liked about this restaurant was that it was like being at home in Sens; none of that, “How would you like your lamb done?”  They just cooked it as it should be cooked, medium rare, and gave it to you 🙂  It’s like a coffee, if you have to ask and explain, go back to Germany.

L’Esperance.  Hope. I hope we get back there soon!

  9. I agree with the meat choice, Medium rare is perfect for any cut 🙂 I cringe when the waiter asks, and cringe even harder when other people say ‘well done’ arrggh!!
    Great post 🙂

    • Thank you Lisa. I only cringe if they put it on my plate, all brittle and juiceless. At that point, it’s useless to complain, they wouldn’t understand.
