Jamie Oliver’s January magazine issue is so exciting! Also, along with my subscription, I got a calendar with a recipe for each month. Now we are not going to do Julie and Julia with the calendar, whereby I make the recipe of the month, religiously. That’s silly and as boring as the movie (Nothing against you Meryl. You were fabulous). But I’m going to make some of the recipes because they look so good!
I bought some blood oranges but they turned out to be some sort of failed hybrids with anemic color and not that great tasting. Determined to make this salad, I substituted one of my favorite citrus fruits, pomelo or Chinese grapefruit and added some clementines for color. Sweet, crunchy, juicy, tasty and pretty, it worked. Jamie is so talented! Look Frugal, no meat!
I’m going to copy exactly Jamie’s January calendar recipe here. Hopefully, you can find good blood oranges.
Jamie’s Winter Fruit Salad
100 grams rocket
2 blood oranges
1 pomegranate
Juice 1/2 lemon
3-4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Salt
Mint sprigs
4 balls of mozzarella
Coarse ground pepper
30 grams creamy pecorino
Wash and spin dry the rocket. Peel the oranges, removing the pith and break into chunks. Remove the seeds from the pomegranate.
Make a dressing with the olive oil, lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Toss the rocket, mint and orange chunks with the dressing and pile onto 4 plates. Tear up the mozzarella and add to the salad. Sprinkle with coarse ground pepper. Scatter the pomegranate seeds on the salad and drizzle with a little olive oil, adding shavings of pecorino on top.
That is one beautiful salad! The colors are absolutely wonderful.
Thank you Kathy.
Definitely looks great! Jamie Oliver definitely has some great recipes.
I agree. Before last summer, I had never heard of Jamie Oliver. I was really missing out!
Looks just perfect for this time of year.
Looks great. Love the addition of orange! You’re the first person I’ve heard anything negative about that movie from – I’ve never seen it, but it;s still a breathe of fresh air 😀
You should rent the movie and see what you think. Pay no attention to me. I didn’t like ET.
This looks amazing! Super delicious-great flavors! 🙂
That looks fantastic – we have so many oranges here right now and some lovely grapefruit too – this is going to be made very soon. Possibly this evening!
Thank you. I bet you do. Many of the citrus fruits in the market are coming from Spain.
Oh, those “blood oranges” must have been so disappointing! I had an experience like that. I bought these purple carrots at the farmer’s market. Turns out that the purple color was only on the outside. You peeled them, and they were no longer purple. Weird, and sad at the same time.
I know baconbiscuit, it’s like a rip off. Next time I’m going to insist on seeing one cut open before I buy.
